This past weekend at faire, I was able to sample a good handful of dishes. The topic of food at faire, and that compared to food available during the actual Rennaisance also came up.
One of the most common items that you see at almost every faire is a turkey leg. It wasn't believed that turkeys were around, since they are indigenous to North America (which wasn't colonized until Jamestown in 1607 [big party next year]).
I had the theory that they COULD be period, since Europe became aware that North America existed in 1492.
According to Cornell University: "European explorers took Wild Turkeys to Europe from Mexico in the early 1500s. They were so successfully domesticated in Europe that English colonists brought them back with them when they settled on the Atlantic Coast. The domestic form has retained the white tail tip of the original Mexican subspecies, and that character can be used to distinguish wandering barnyard birds from wild turkeys which have chestnut-brown tail tips."
As our Faire takes place in the year of Lord 1539, turkeys were not quite common food, but were available as a source of food (probably kept more for nobility and the upper crust sice they were rare).
In conclusion: Our turkey legs are SAFE!!!!
(Maryland crab dip, not so period, but GOOD!!!)

Well, considering everyone's politcs during the time period, I'm sure that some of them were around, it's just that the chinese weren't sharing with the rest of the class.
I tell you what, though, best $10 meal at Faire a guy could ask for (and with plenty to share, too!)

Hmm ... nothing speaks to me more than cheescake on a stick or mac n cheese on a stick ... true renaissance foods.
