Introducing a new loki!! « Thread Started on Aug 13, 2007, 11:36pm »
After sampling someone's gingerbread flavored loki at faire last year (if indeed they called it "loki" and not some other name), I was determined to find a way to get some- wether that meant finding out who made it and snagging a bottle from them, or expiramenting and making it on my own.
Impatience won out: I made it on my own.
About $40 later, it's sitting in a jar in the kitchen as we speak- doing its thing and combining flavors. (We're probably going to wait until late in the season to try it when it's cold). Appearance? It is black black black! You can't see through it when you hold the jar up to a light, but there are a few tiny shimmers of gold in it. Big thanks go to Deuce, who was my taste-tester guinea pig along the way. He'd taste a bit, make a face and hand it back, I'd tinker, he'd take a taste and make a face and hand it back, I'd tinker some more, then he finally took a sip, his eyes lit up, and he gave me the thumbs up. "You've got it."
So what did I name it? I'm sure *most* people associate gingerbread-flavor with Christmastime. Well, I actually associate it with goats. We gave handfulls of dry sorghum/molasses mixed in with grain to our pet goats growing up, so that memory, combined with how the loki actually looks, and an ingredient in it, I've named it Black Goat Loki. Unusual, yes, but who needs another nondescript "gingerbread loki" running around faire?
Hope to have a small batch to sample later this fall when it starts to get chilly outside.

Deuce was telling me about this and about a couple things he was playing with, and I just can't wait. There could be some more drunken all-night singing in our future...

Yep. If I'm not able to get up to Indiana for my mom's wedding, I'll plan on a repeat of last year for Labor day weekend. (I'll sneak the camera up this time!)

Unfortuantely, unless you're making gingerbread flavored loki, my recipe won't do you much good. Start with a good flavorless alcohol you like already, or an alcohol that's flavored similarly to your recipe, that's about all I can help with.
You might search online for recipes- but you'll probably find flavors, not a generic "base" loki.

Thanks. I have made almond loki and this time around I may try cherry. I've made cherry meade and plan to brew a batch of "plain" meade but in an oak cast.

Cool. For almond, adding almond extract might add a good flavor. We've just discovered a super cherry-flavored rum (?) called "Sailor." Not Sailor Jerry, just Sailor, they make coconut too. We're going to make choc covered cherries with it later on- they've been marinating in the fridge for about 3 weeks now.

Coconut!! YUMMMY. I try to use the real stuff when I use an extract, not the artificle kinds. Costs a bit more but has a much better flavor. I think I must stop and get the items to make it NOW. I think I have some of my original Almond Loki that should be about 10 years old by now...sssmmmooooooottthhh
Not saying I will have it, but I will try and find/meet you at some point opening Sunday....

I am jealous!!! I visited the Hall and was told flat out that they could not or would not sell to me. I just assumed that if they did, it would constitute a package goods sale that they are not licensed for.
